ImageA group of Hindu fanatics led by one Yogesh Agrawal, leader of Darma Raksha Sena, forcibly entered St John Lutheran Church at Jabalpur under the Gorakpur Police station limits. The church was conducting a three-day Bible workshop for its believers, starting from 15 June 2006.

No sooner had the programme started when the police arrived on the spot for an enquiry into the programme and the details of the participants. Pastor Vijay Sethi of the church said, "It is a training programme on the Bible and Christian living for the believers and it has nothing to do with conversion and baptism."

The programme was attended by around 27 participants drawn from different parts of Jabalpur. The Darma Raksha Sena leader said, "It is an attempt to convert and we object to any sort of forced conversion." The police then took all the participants to police station along with the Hindu activists. Superintendent of Police Shrinivas Rao said, "The police have not registered any case so far. We have just recorded the statements of all the Christians and then set them free."

Fr Anand Muttungal, the spokesperson for the Catholic Church in Madhya Pradesh, termed it as a repeat of history. Recalling the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister’s assurance on 14 June 2006 that all communities would be protected in the State, he said, “Even while his statement is still in the news, the Hindu fanatics have taken law into their hands. What should we understand from this?”

The attack should also be seen in the context of the visit to the state by the National Commission for Minorities to enquire into the increasing incidence of attacks on the minorities, particularly the Christian minority.
