Tension prevailed in Banauli village of Chandauli district near Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh following the desecration of a statue of Dalit icon Dr BR Ambedkar.

The villagers raised an alarm after they saw the bust lying on the ground in two parts on 27 January 2007 and caught two suspected miscreants, identified as Kalmu and Rahmat Ali. The irate villagers tied up the two to a tree and beat them up before handing them over to the police.

According to the police, Kalmu and Rahmat had pushed the statue out of curiosity before it fell down and was damaged. The bust was repaired on 28 January 2007, they said.
