In a calculated move, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has sought to downplay its general secretary Pramod Mahajan's description of the Gujarat riots as a ‘black spot for any civilised society’ saying the view was ‘in line’ with the party's stand. "Both Atal Behari Vajpayee and LK Advani have described the Godhra incident and its aftermath as extremely unfortunate. There is nothing in the article (Mahajan's write-up in BJP Today) that is against the party line," its general secretary and spokesperson Arun Jaitley said. Asked about the concern expressed by Mahajan over the ‘internal situation’ in the party, he said it was an "honest expression, a sincere expression of concern." "There is no dispute about it," Jaitley said amidst reports that Mahajan met party President Advani. He said the article was initially written for a Marathi daily and subsequently a translated version was published in the party organ.
