BJP leader Jethabhai Prabhudas Patel, an absconding accused in a post-Godhra riot case, was arrested on 18 October 2004 after he surrendered before the police in Gujarat. "We had information that he (Patel) had returned from Maharashtra after assembly elections and kept a watch near his house. He surrendered to the police when told that he had no other option," police inspector RP Chaudhary said. Patel, who is a BJP leader from Sabarkantha district of north Gujarat, was produced before the chief judicial magistrate's court that sent him to judicial custody. Besides, being the Sabarkantha district BJP chief, Patel is also the chairman of Sabar Dairy District and president of the district agricultural market committee. It is alleged that he had led a violent crowd that resorted to rioting, arson and loot in Jamla village during post-Godhra communal riots in 2002, Chaudhary said, adding, "no one was killed in this attack".
