“It is for the people of India to end the menace of communalism and fascism. They should let India regain its lost image of being a country of peace and amity. Let the country focus on the true economic and other needs of her people.” In a press statement jointly released by All India Christian Council, Jamiat Ulama I Hind and All India Federation of SC/ST Government Employees Organisations, they praised Justice HG Balakrishna, who has been appointed chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for SC/ST Reservation Classification, for his courage to stand for secularism, truth and justice and fight against all forms of communalism and fascism. The occasion was a function recently organised in Bangalore to felicitate him on his new appointment. The statement said the last thirteen years saw the damage that communalism and fascism had done to the country. Ever since the demolition of Babri Masjid by the Sangh Parivar, the country had been turned into a cauldron of communal hate, violence and oppression. “Not a single week passes by without a report of communal violence,” it added. According to the statement, after the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power, there had an unprecedented targeting of the minorities and oppression of the marginalised sections in society. Attempts had been made to legislate fascist laws to curtail personal freedom. The oppression of Dalits had also gone up by many times. “The recent conflict over Uma Bharti’s arrest and the packaging of her crime being that of hoisting the national flag while the charges against her were those of attempt to murder, violation of the ban orders and unlawful assembly show the lies that the fascists resort to in order to fool the people into their trap,” it said. The statement further said, “The real need of the country is development, progress, security, employment and mobility. This can never take place when communalism is rife and fascism is ruling the roost. The only way to ensure that the true needs of the people are met is to stand up as one people and reject all kinds of communalism, extremism and fascism irrespective of all party affiliations.”
