ImageThe 109 Christian families at Christianpeta in Koraput district have been spared demolition of their houses following the intervention of Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

As part of the beautification drive in Jeypore town, the district administration had issued a notice to the Christian families in Christianpeta to relocate. The eviction notice had made the area communally tense and the district collector had arranged for extra deployment of police force. Although the notice had been served sometime in May 2005, the eviction drive gathered momentum only recently.

While some Christian families, who did not want to be named, claimed that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists were behind the eviction move, Superintendent of Police Arun Bothra denied the charge.

Following the Chief Minister's intervention, Koraput Collector Subha Sarma issued orders to stop the "eviction process in Christianpeta for now".
