Chennai: The Commission for Scheduled Castes/Tribes and Backward Classes on 9 August 2007 pleaded with Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to strive for implementation of the Ranganath Mishra panel’s report recommending Scheduled Caste status for Dalit Christians, to enable them avail themselves of the benefits of reservation. Led by Archbishop of Chennai-Mylapore AM Chinnappa, a Commission delegation called on the Chief Minister and submitted a memorandum. They urged Karunanidhi to take up the issue with United Progressive Alliance Chairperson Sonia Gandhi. The delegation also requested him to ask the Centre to bring about necessary changes in the relevant law, which came in the way of providing Scheduled Caste status for Dalit Christians. Around 65 per cent of the 45 lakh Christians in the State are Dalits with over 80 per cent of them being poor. (Source: The Hindu dated 10 August 2007)
