Meerut: British tourists have been stopped from visiting the cemetery at Meerut in Uttar Pradesh where their ancestors have been buried. The tourists have come to visit their ancestors who died during the Mutiny 150 years ago. They met the local CNI priest under whom the local cemetery falls and gave him a plaque which the pastor refused to take. However the picture appeared in the local press, resulting in wide resentment against the British visiting the cemetery. The activists called for a bandh in the city, forcing all educational institutions to close. Pastor Peter Baldev, the CNI dean and president of local clergy fellowship, called for a meeting of all the local clergy to sort out the issue. They sought help from All India Christian Council (aicc) to lead a delegation to the authorities concerned. The agitation against the British tourists was allegedly by BJP leader Laxmikant Bajpai, a former minister in the State.
