New Delhi: On 9 October 2007, the Supreme Court refused to grant bail to Dara Singh, who has been sentenced to life in the murder of Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two minor sons in Orissa's Keonjhar district eight years ago.
Justice Arijit Pasayat said the grant of bail in the case would not serve any purpose as he was also awarded life sentence in Father Arul Doss murder case. Ravindra Pal Singh alias Dara Singh had sought bail submitting that his old mother was ailing and he was required to look after her. His counsel Sibo Shankar Mishra said Dara had already been in jail for seven years.
Dara Singh along with Mahendra Hembrom was found guilty of burning to death Staines and his minor sons, Philip and Timothy, outside a church at Manoharpur village in Keonjhar district of Orissa on 22 January 1999. Both the accused have challenged their conviction and sentence, while the CBI has filed an appeal against the acquittal of 12 other accused in the case.
The Khurda sessions court in September 2003 had convicted all the 14 accused. While Dara Singh and Hembrom were sentenced to death, others were awarded life imprisonment. Orissa High Court had later commuted the death sentences of the duo to life imprisonment and acquitted the rest. (Source: zeenews.com, 9 October 2007) |
