 Bhopal: Atrocities against Dalits have added an ugly chapter in Madhya Pradesh when a man was stabbed to death and his body set ablaze because he lashed a bull decorated for Govardhan puja.
Kailash Bagri (40) grabbed a stick and beat the animal, which was tied to a poll by his neighbour Suresh Patidar, an OBC member. The incident happened at Khachhroda village, 45 km from the district town of Dhar on 9 November 2007. Dhar SP Chanchal Shekhar said a group of people from the community attacked Bagri and stabbed him to death while his mother, wife, brother and sister-in-law watched helplessly. "They set the body on fire to destroy evidence and threatened Bagri's family against reporting the murder to the police," Shekhar said.
On 13 November 2007, one of them managed to slip out and report the matter to the police. Worshipping cattle as part of Govardhan puja, which falls a day after Diwali, is common in rural Madhya Pradesh.
Bagri was angry with the bull because it broke free from poll and ran into his house destroying decorations. On 14 November 2007, the police arrested six people after registering a case of murder against 16 members of the Patidar community.
