ImageNew Delhi: A 17-year-old Dalit girl was burnt to death in Sehora near Jabalpur on 2 March 2008 after she tried to fight off her molesters. A murder case has been registered against the accused.

This incident took place 30 km from Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh. The girl died in the Jabalpur district hospital on 3 March 2008.

According to the police, the girl was burned to death because her brothers resisted a married man in their neighbourhood stalking their sister. The girl was alone when Amirchand Bhaskar, also a Dalit, stormed into her house in Sehora town with his friends.

"The girl's brother said Bhaskar was harassing her and making lewd comments," Sehora SHO J S Bisen said. Bisen said Bhaskar was "enraged" after the girl's brothers went to his house to complain against him. "The brothers warned his family that they should stop him from harassing their sister."

The complaint, however, drew a violent reaction from Bhaskar, who first thrashed the brothers and later, set the girl on fire. The police arrested Bhaskar and six of his friends. They were looking for two more accomplices
