In the wake of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in the Supreme Court, the Union Government has formally referred to the newly constituted National Commission for Religious and Linguistic Minorities (NCRLM) the issue of whether a person belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC) should, on converting to Christianity or Islam, necessarily lose his SC status.
This issue is pending before the Supreme Court, before which the Government has said that it had decided to have the issue examined by a Commission. The NCRLM has been informed that a notification to enlarge its terms of reference in order to cover this specific issue is being drafted.
