After the Church of North India-run College decided to reserve seats for Dalit Christian students, the Delhi Catholic Church is to reserve teaching posts for Christians.
Bishop of Delhi, CNI Revd Karam Masih says, “Till now, there was no justice either for Christians or Dalit Christians. That is why we have given guidelines to the principal of St Stephen's College.”
Bishop Karam Masih is laying the grounds for taking forward the move by St Stephen's College to give reservation to Dalit Christian students. The Delhi Catholic Archdiocese has now proposed that teacher's positions also be reserved.
The Catholic Archdiocese runs as many as 27 schools, including the prestigious Convent of Jesus and Mary, Carmel Convent, St Columba's and Don Bosco School.
DCA Director Rev Dominic Emmanuel says, “We must think of giving greater priority to our own Christians in our own institutions.”
Rev Emmanuel quotes government statistics to make this point, which say Christians are the most educated among minorities but also top the unemployment charts. But what does the student community feel about this.
The step to provide preferential employment to Christians in educational institutions comes at a time when a National Sample Survey Organisation Report reveals that the percentage of those unemployed is the highest among Christians. - 4.4 per cent as against 2.3 per cent Muslims.
No wonder then Christian groups want reservations not only for students, but also for teachers.
