Lucknow: The Indian Justice Party headed by former bureaucrat Dr Udit Raj has made a fervent appeal to all Dalit MPs to vote in favour of the UPA government and prevent BSP president Mayawati from becoming Prime Minister. Addressing a press conference in Lucknow on 19 July 2008, Dr Raj said it was the duty of 119 Dalits MPs in the Lok Sabha to ensure that a "leader who sells Dalits' interests for personal gains" does not manage to occupy the centre stage of national politics.
"If she becomes the Prime Minister, she will heap atrocities on Dalits across the country — just like she has done in Uttar Pradesh. Dalit MPs must oppose the stand that Mayawati has taken and save the UPA government," he stated. "Ms Mayawati is one leader who has consistently worked against the interests of Dalits. She has not allowed any other Dalit to emerge as a leader and has ensured that the rights of Dalits are cut down. She issued an order saying the State SC/ST Commission was not empowered to summon senior IAS officials," he said. The IJP chief added that Ms Mayawati had amassed a huge amount of wealth for herself and had done nothing substantial for the deprived and downtrodden sections of the society. Talking about the BJP's opposition to Periyar EV Ramaswamy Naickar, the IJP president alleged that surprisingly even BSP supremo Mayawati had issued verbal orders banning any attempts to promote and propagate the teachings of Periyar in Uttar Pradesh.
