On Thursday, 13 October 2004, the police stopped people from attending Yesu Durbar in Bhilwal village in Uttar Pradesh. It was a durbar started a month ago. Their appeals failed to move the law-enforcing men. “It is a security threat. Go and get permission from the district magistrate. Then only you can go in,” they said in unison. That was it. Nothing could change them.
When they found they were unable to prevent the surging masses, they smashed the stage. Not content with that, they threatened to wield their batons on the unsuspecting masses. Finally the poor people, who had walked long distances to hear the Word of God, went away dismayed and heart-broken. Meanwhile the aicc office here took up the matter with the Chief Minister. The Chief Minister, after contacting the officials concerned, assured that there would not be any problems for Yesu Durbar henceforth.
However the people living in the village feel frightened and are not sure of having any more Yesu Durbar. Call it divine providence, the leaders of five neighbouring villages approached the organisers, each requesting to shift to Yesu Durbar to his village. “We will get all necessary permissions. We are Dalits. We are not afraid of anyone.”
