ImageLucknow: A Pastor has been attacked by Hindu fanatics in Badhohi district of Uttar Pradesh, leading to the speculation that Uttar Pradesh could be heading for an Orissa-like situation.

Pastor David Amarnath was attacked at his residence in Sandravidas Nagar of Badhohi district by Hindu fanatics on 31 August 2008. Pastor David has been serving the Christian community at Sandravidas Nagar for the last 15 years. On 31 August 2008, a group of Hindu fanatics came to the Pastor’s residence in search of him. Sensing that these people came to attack him, the Pastor hid himself in a bathroom. When the mob could not find the Pastor, they left the house. After some time the police came to the Pastor’s house and took him to the police station without any charges in spite of all the protests by the Pastor.

The police abused and manhandled the Pastor all the way to the police station. After reaching the police station, they subjected him to further torture and forced him to sign some papers before he was let off. They later warned him of severe consequences if he refused to leave the place.

On 1 September 2008, the same fanatics attacked a team of Christian workers at a market place in the same area. They abused the Christian workers in front of many people. When the fanatics were about to beat them up, the police arrived and took the Christian workers to the police station. The police made them sign some papers stating they would leave the place on their own. Otherwise they would be ready to face any consequences.

All India Christian Council (aicc) has condemned the attack on the Christian community and sought stringent action against the culprits, including the police. A memorandum has been submitted to the local administration to this effect.
