India government confirms increase in communal violence |

 Orissa has earned the dubious distinction of having the highest number of cases of communal violence this year, recording a 12-time jump in such incidents compared to 2007, while Jammu and Kashmir earned laurels for not having a single such incident.
The all-India figure of 855 incidents of communal violence has also surpassed that of the previous year's 761, according to latest government data.
Orissa, which was in news for the attack against Christians, reported 178 such incidents till November 30, 2008 topping the list followed by Madhya Pradesh (115) and Uttar Pradesh (104).
In 2007, Orissa recorded only 15 such cases while Madhya Pradesh, the topper, had 180 such incidents and Uttar Pradesh had 138. Maharashtra, which was second in 2007 with 140 cases, had 97 cases in 2008.
There were no incidents of communal riots in Jammu and Kashmir this year, the official data said which noted that there was only one such case last year in the state in which four persons were injured. In 2006 also, there were no communal incidents.
Among those 153 killed in 2008 in communal riots, Orissa again topped the list accounting for 28 percent deaths. A total of 43 people were killed and 78 injured in the eastern state this year compared to three and 61 respectively in 2007.
Thrity-two people were killed in Madhya Pradesh this year while 17 were killed in Maharashtra in communal riots, the government figures said.
