ImageTirunelveli: The police arrested two persons on 31 May 2009 for allegedly killing three Dalits in Keela Ambur area of Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu on 30 May 2009.

Sudalai (45) of Keela Ambur, Ganesan (20) and Kumar alias Muthukumar of Malayankulam, all of them Dalits, were hacked to death by an armed group at Keela Ambur on 30 May 2009.

Over 300 police personnel were deployed to prevent any law and order problem and three special teams were formed to investigate the case. Key accused in the murder Saravanan (23) and Anthony (24) of Keela Ambur were arrested.

More than 500 people of the village thronged the Ambasamudram GH where the post-mortem of the bodies took place and squatted on the Ambasamud¬ram main road, urging the police to arrest the murderers immediately and sanctioning of relief fund to the family of the victims. They also demanded Ambasumudram DSP to be removed from the case. Subsequently the shops in the area downed their shutters and a tense situation prevailed.

After SP Asra Garg assured the protesters that two accused had been arrested and the third would be arrested immediately and the Cheranmahadevi DSP would investigate the case the protesters dispersed.

According to police sources, previous enmity was the cause of the murder. During the car festival of Sivasaila Nathar Kovil temple on 13 April 2009, a quarrel had broken out between Ramesh, a Dalit and a caste Hin¬du Saravanan of Kella Ambur.

Subsequently both of them filed complaints at the Alwarkurichi police. The sources said Saravanan was lodged in the prison. When he came out on conditional bail, he allegedly planned to murder Sudalai, who was instrumental in his being arrested under the SC, ST Act.

On 30 May 2009 when Sudalai was returning from his grove with Ganesan and Muthukumar at Kella Ambur, a group led by Saravanan murdered them.
