Mumbai: Shiv Sena has demanded the suspension of an `upa-sarpanch' of Nigdivandan grampanchayat in Satara tehsil after he prevented the Dalit woman 'sarpanch' of the village from hoisting the national flag on Independence Day.
"I have spoken to Satara District Collector Vikas Deshmukh and we demand that the upa-sarpanch be suspended for insulting a Dalit," Sena spokesperson Neelam Gorhe said.
The Sena also demanded that the Block Development Officers in the district review the situation in all villages so that such incidents did occur, Gorhe said.
Upa-sarpanch Bajirao has been taken into custody and a case was registered against him under the Prevention of SC/ST Atrocities Act after he humiliated the Dalit woman sarpanch and prevented her from hoisting the tricolour. (Source: samaylive.com, 16 August 2009, http://www.mail-archive.com/
