Kendrapara: A poor Dalit couple in Jagatsinghpur district of Orissa has sold their four-day-old son to repay a loan of Rs 3,000 taken at the time of his birth to pay the hospital bill. The boy was their sixth child, after four sons and a daughter.
Rabindra Bhoi and his wife Santilata gave away their son on 5 July 2007 to a childless couple introduced to them by a chemist from whom they had borrowed the money. "I had taken the loan for my wife’s treatment. I couldn’t repay it. I even asked a close relative to adopt our baby as he did not have any son but he said no," said Rabindra, a 48-year-old daily-wage labourer from Andhoti village in coastal Orissa’s Jagatsinghpur district.
Jagatsinghpur block development officer Sarata Mohapatra has been asked to look into the issue.
