Cop rapes minor Dalit girl in Uttar Pradesh |

In yet another case of high-handedness of the police, a policeman allegedly raped a minor Dalit girl in Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh on 6 March 2007. According to sources, the accused is absconding. The incident took place on 4 March 2007 and a case was registered in connection with the incident on 5 March 2007 following a medical examination of the girl. Superintendent of Police RK Rai said the accused policeman Virpal Singh Chaudhari had been placed under suspension. The police official said orders had been issued for the immediate arrest of Chaudhari who fled the scene after committing the crime. According to the sources, Chaudhari, who was posted at Bichwan police station, allegedly raped the girl at her residence. He fled when she raised an alarm, leaving behind his motorcycle. The incident sparked off a strong protest by leaders of different political parties, who sat on a dharna at Isan Nadi crossing on 5 March 2007 and demanded that stern action be taken against the policeman.
