The Supreme Court came down heavily on the Narendra Modi Government in Gujarat on 7 May 2004, for filing an application seeking modification of its earlier order shifting the Best Bakery case out of the state for trial in Maharashtra. Terming the application as “abuse of the process of court” (for selfish reasons, rather than for strengthening the cause of justice), the Bench, consisting of Justice Doraiswamy Raju and Justice Arijit Pasayat said, “Being the highest court of the land, this court retains an inherent power and jurisdiction for dealing with extraordinary situation in the larger interests of administration of justice and for preventing manifest injustice being done.”
