Good Friday is now a holiday in Gujarat! This has come about after the Government finally conceding to the demand of the All India Christian Council that Good Friday be declared a holiday. It may be recalled that Karmayogi – a school activity calendar for the current academic year 2004 – 2005, released by the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board did not have any celebration days for Muslims and Christians of minority communities out of the fifty holidays mentioned. The calendar clearly showed communal bias towards the minority communities. Yet the schools run by the minority communities had been forced to buy the calendars! All India Christian Council (aicc) state unit had called upon the minority communities to oppose the discriminatory policies of the government and sought the withdrawal of the calendar.
