A group of Dalit student leaders in the Meerut University attacked a professor in the sports department on 16 October 2006 for his alleged casteist remarks against some students. Students, including boys and girls, from Nanakchand Anglo Sanskrit Degree College had come to the university for hockey team trials for the inter-university tournaments. The students alleged that the sports professor made casteist remarks against them. The college students then called in Dalit student leaders who beat up the professor and ransacked the sports department office. Meanwhile, an angry mob of students affiliated to the National Students Union of India (NSUI) ransacked the office of the Vice-Chancellor of the Agra University. The agitated students were demanding an audience with the Vice-Chancellor to discuss their demands. The students had already submitted a memorandum of their demands to the Vice-Chancellor's office earlier and were angry that he did not meet them. (Source: NDTV)
