The Sarpanch and his deputy have been arrested in connection with the killing of four members of a Dalit family at Khairlanji village in Bhandara district of Maharashtra on 29 September 2006.

 

Sarpanch Upasrao Khandate and his deputy Urkhoda Khurpe were arrested on 30 November 2006 from Khairlanji on the charges of conspiracy and abetment of the crime, the police sources said.

 

The killings had sparked violent protests across Maharashtra in November 2006. Forty-four persons from the same village were earlier arrested in connection with the case.
