In view of the fast developments happening in Dangs district of Gujarat, the All India Christian Council held a meeting at Mehmedabad in the district on 2 February 2006 to take stock of the situation. The meeting attended by several prominent Christian leaders from different parts of the district expressed concern over the latest developments. In several villages in the district, sadhus have been screening the movie on the Ramayana and threatening tribal Christians with forcible conversion during Shabri Kumbh Mela. “We will come and take everyone to the Pampa Sarovar for ghar vapsi bath,” they allegedly threatened. “Tribal men are worried about the safety of their wives and daughters. This is the time antisocial elements can play mischief under the cover of religious frenzy,” one of the Christian leaders said. Saffron flags have been hoisted on non-Christian houses to help target tribal Christians for attack. “There is also a conspiracy to encourage non-Christian tribals to attack Christians. The aim is to create internal conflicts within the tribal community. Both the communities live peacefully and there is no history of conflicts in the district,” another Christian leader said. Many of the leaders expressed concern over the proposed visit by several Viswa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leaders to deliver speeches in the district. “They are going to create an impression of 'Hinduism in danger'. This is intended to provoke the Hindus living in the district to attack Christian institutions. Towards this end, literature and VCDs on the mela are being distributed in different parts of the district,” they said.
