Amid raging protests over the massacre of four members of a Dalit family by upper caste people at Khairlanji village in Bhandara district of Vidarbha, Maharashtra, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh visited the village and said the Government was not opposed to handing over the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The Chief Minister also handed over a cheque of Rs 2 lakh to Bhayyalal Bhotmange, the lone survivor of the massacre. "We are open to transferring the case to the CBI and will take up the matter with the Prime Minister's Office," Deshmukh said.

Tension prevailed in Nagpur where a total bandh called by Dalit groups was observed. Sporadic incidents of violence were reported from the city as well as its adjoining areas on 10 November 2006.

Protestors blocked traffic, pelted stones, burnt tyres and fought pitched battle with the police in South Nagpur areas of Ajni, Manewada and Medical College Square. The police had to fire teargas shells to disperse the protestors. According to the police, about 250 protestors were rounded up and schools, shops and petrol pumps remained closed.

Surekha Bhotmange and her 17-year-old daughter Priyanka were allegedly paraded naked and gang-raped before being killed along with her sons Rahul (21) and Sudhir (23) by upper caste people.
